If you were to send a Mother's Day card to your mom in Sweden this week you'd be a few weeks early. Swedes celebrate Mother's day, Mors dag, on the last Sunday in May.
When to celebrate Mother's Day can get confusing for expats in Scandinavia. Denmark will celebrate Mother's Day this coming Sunday, Norway on the second Sunday in February, Sweden on May 31st this year. Nordic neighbor Finland will join Denmark, the U.S. and many other countries in honoring moms this weekend.
Those against the commercialization of Mother's Day will be happy to know it's also a charitable holiday in Sweden. The Swedish Red Cross (Röda Korset) sells tiny plastic flowers throughout May to benefit impoverished mothers and their kids.
Some Swedish children also pick a bouquet of wild daffodils for their mom.
