Early Snowfall in Stockholm

A first seasonal dusting of snowfall covered parts of Stockholm and Uppsala, briefly, this morning. Snowfall in the Stockholm region is unusual for October. The snow season in Stockholm typically begins in November. This morning’s snowfall in Stockholm didn’t stick to the ground for very long but did inspire me to post these beautiful snow photos (note: not from today) from various parts of Sweden....

Hooked on Wallander, Part 2

As mentioned before, I’m hooked on Wallander. Last weekend, I had the chance to finish watching the 2005/2006 series of films featuring Krister Henriksson, the late Johanna Sällström and Ola Rapace. Without giving away how this series of films ends, let’s just say the final film will leave you on the edge of your seat and proves to be sadly ironic, not to be missed! It's impossible not to get misty-eyed watching the finale of this series.

I plan on watching the 2009 Swedish Wallander series at some point but will need a little break knowing that Sällström (played Linda Wallander, amazing actress who committed suicide in real life at the age of 32, a few months after the first series ended, on the same day as being released from a treatment center, leaving behind a 5-year-old daughter) will no longer be a part of the films. Henning Mankell, author of the Wallander novels that inspired the series of films, did not have the heart to see a new Linda Wallander cast for the 2009 series. The fictional Linda, however, is featured in Mankells’s latest book, released in August.

Henriksson (who plays Kurt Wallander in the Swedish language series) talks about the 2009 films (not to be confused with the English Kenneth Branagh series) and missing Johanna in this Aftonbladet article (in Swedish).

Wikipedia says that in 2004, "Sällström experienced the Indian Ocean tsunami in Thailand with her one year old daughter. They survived only because she held on to a tree with one hand and held her daughter with the other."

This post cannot end without a touching video tribute to the late Johanna Sällström....

Stockholm’s Newest Comedy Club Goes "All English"

A new comedy club is about to open its doors in Stockholm with a lingual twist. For stand-up comedy to truly work, you need to know all of the nuances of a language. Think about "not getting" a comedian's material in your own language and think of how impossible it is to fully "get" jokes from comedians speaking a language that you’re not fluent in. That’s why excitement is building for the city’s newest comedy club among expats in Stockholm who are not fluent in Swedish. Laughs at The Liffey (hosted at an Irish pub in Gamla Stan/Old Town) will premiere October 8th and then become a regular Thursday night event. The club’s website says it will be "a place for both native English speakers to bust a move and for Swedish comedians to hone their skills in the Queens language."

Looking over the lineup for the club’s opening night, it features two Australians, one Irishman, one Canadian, one comedian from the UK and five Swedes.

You can learn more about Laughs at The Liffey here.

You can join the club’s Facebook group for fans here.

Sweden’s New National Park

(cc photo courtesy of Sea_daddy)

Promoting marine biodiversity, eco-friendly tourism and development along with sustainable fishery, Sweden’s new national park is open for business this week.

Kosterhavet, Sweden’s first marine national park, hopes to protect 6000, yes 6000! marine species, 200 in the seabed of the Kosterfjord, species found nowhere else in Sweden, in the waters off the Bohuslän coast, near the town of Strömstad and the Norwegian border. Because of its location on the Atlantic Continental Slope, kelp-forested Kosterhavet, already home to Sweden’s largest population of harbor seals, hopes to become a safe haven/breeding ground for brachiopods, sponges, corals, unusual species of red and brown algae as well as a nesting area for rare seabirds such as arctic terns and skuas.

Bengt Littorin gives us a glimpse into this underwater world with this slideshow....

First Swede in Space Getting Ready for Spacewalk

December 2006. 10 years after being selected to train as a Mission Specialist for NASA Space Shuttle missions, Swedish astronaut and physicist Christer Fuglesang made his first spacewalk on a mission for the International Space Station, becoming the first Swede is space. This Friday, Fuglesang will make his second-ever spacewalk, his first of two spacewalks from Space Shuttle Discovery this time around. The Stockholm native will retrieve scientific experiments from the International Space Station and prepare the ISS for the arrival of a new module for upcoming experiments.

Wikipedia says Fuglesang is "projected to be the first astronaut outside of the United States or Russia to participate in more than three spacewalks."

When I found out Fuglesang has a Twitter account I was hoping to see messages from space. But so far, he has not tweeted from his latest space adventure. His last message on Twitter posted shortly before liftoff of Discovery. Hopefully Fuglesang will have access to his Twitter account while in space with time to update us while he’s up there. Astronaut Mike Massimino became the first person to tweet from space in May. Some of my favorite tweets from Massimino, aka Astro_Mike, (which I saved) included "From orbit: We see 16 sunrises and sunsets in 24 hrs, each one spectacular as the sun lights up the atmosphere in a spectrum of colors," "From orbit: Getting ready for bed, sleeping in space is cool, tie down your sleeping bag and float inside of it, very relaxing" and "From orbit: At the end of my spacewalk, I had time to just look at the Earth, the most awesome sight my eyes have seen, undescribable."

(image of Fuglesang's first spacewalk courtesy of Wikipedia)
