Blueberry Soup

It hydrates you, it warms you and some say it's also a cure for hangovers. Enjoy some warm blueberry soup the next time you work up a sweat in the snow. That's what Swedes do.

A few weeks ago I wrote about Vasaloppet, the world's biggest, longest and oldest ski marathon, which takes place in the province of Dalarna, Sweden every March. After following and writing about the race I discovered several cross country ski marathons across the globe are modeled after the famous Swedish race, including "loppets" in Ashikawa, Japan, Washington D.C. (a bike event called Vasa Ride), Ottawa, Canada and Vasaloppet USA in Minnesota. And many of those races keep a Vasaloppet tradition alive by hydrating their competitors with sweet, warm Swedish Blueberry Soup/Blåbärssoppa (also served chilled during summertime events and parties). Fans of Blåbärssoppa say it can taste like a liquefied version of blueberry pie with a hint of cinnamon. Yum.

Want to treat yourself, your friends, your family to some steaming-hot or thirst-quenching blueberry soup? Check out this recipe.

A Swedish Facebook friend sent me this message and he has a point, so...

Facebook friend to me:
"Technically it's Bilberry and not Blueberry. I only recently learned the difference myself..."

Me to Facebook friend:
"You make a good point. I noticed an entry from Iceland on recipes.wikia.com calls it Bilberry Soup, http://korta.nu/3ba0. But other web sources, including Sweden.se, race websites and blogs, Swedish cookbooks such as The Swedish Table and A Swedish Kitchen and many recipe sites call it Blueberry Soup. It's one of those things where I wish everyone would agree to call it one name (one English name along with one Swedish name). :)"
